I’ve actually traded on seven Japanese crypto exchanges (with real money, not test accounts) over the past 18 months. This is the comparison I wish existed when I started.
The 7 Exchanges I’ve Used
1. bitbank
- Strengths: Lowest spot trading fees (Maker -0.02%, Taker 0.12%). Clean UI. Good charting tools.
- Weaknesses: Limited altcoin selection compared to OKJ.
- English: Basic English UI. Support tickets in English with delay.
- Best for: Active spot traders on BTC, ETH, XRP.
2. bitFlyer
- Strengths: Largest BTC liquidity in Japan. T-Plus Bitcoin Lightning futures product. Strong security record.
- Weaknesses: Higher fees on Easy Buy. Lightning futures only.
- English: Good English site at bitflyer.com
- Best for: BTC-focused long-term holders, beginners on the Lightning interface.
3. Coincheck
- Strengths: Simplest UI for beginners. Smartphone app is best in class.
- Weaknesses: Spread is wide on Easy Buy (3–5%). Past 2018 hack still affects trust.
- English: Limited.
- Best for: Complete beginners who’ll only ever DCA small amounts.
4. OKJ (OKCoin Japan)
- Strengths: Widest altcoin lineup in Japan (30+ tokens). Staking on multiple chains. Lower fees on the order-book side.
- Weaknesses: Less brand recognition among newcomers. Mostly Japanese-only customer support.
- English: UI partly translated, support is Japanese-only practically.
- Best for: Intermediate users wanting altcoin exposure or staking yield.
5. BITPOINT
- Strengths: Free withdrawal fees on many coins. TRON, IOST, DOT staking available.
- Weaknesses: Smaller liquidity. Order book can be thin on minor coins.
- English: Limited.
- Best for: Staking yield seekers, frequent withdrawers.
6. GMO Coin
- Strengths: Trusted parent company (GMO Internet). Free JPY deposits and withdrawals. Strong app.
- Weaknesses: Higher spreads on Easy Buy. Order-book interface less polished.
- English: Very limited.
- Best for: Salarymen who want strong corporate parent backing.
7. SBI VC Trade
- Strengths: Backed by SBI Holdings. Tight spreads. Good for SBI Securities customers (unified account experience).
- Weaknesses: Smaller selection. Interface dated.
- English: Limited.
- Best for: Existing SBI Securities customers wanting unified Japanese fintech experience.
My Personal Choice: A Two-Exchange Setup
I keep most of my crypto on bitbank (low spot fees, clean UX) and use OKJ as a satellite for altcoins and staking. This combination covers 95% of what I need.
I avoid keeping more than ¥500,000 on any single exchange. Hot wallet risk is real even at regulated FSA-licensed Japanese exchanges. Large positions move to a hardware wallet within 48 hours.
What All Japanese Exchanges Have in Common
- FSA registration required (avoid any exchange without an FSA license)
- Daily JPY deposit/withdrawal limits, typically ¥2 million
- Tax reporting documents available by January each year
- 2-factor authentication mandatory (use Authy or hardware key)
Summary: Quick Decision Guide
| If you are… | Pick… |
|---|---|
| Complete beginner | bitFlyer (simplest, safest) |
| Cost-conscious active trader | bitbank |
| Altcoin or staking seeker | OKJ |
| Salaryman with SBI Securities | SBI VC Trade |
| BTC-only holder | bitFlyer or GMO Coin |
Whichever you pick, start small, use 2FA, and don’t keep all your coins on one exchange. That’s 90% of the safety conversation right there.
